The Obituary of Stephanie "Step" Michelle Hicks

Stephanie "Step" Michelle Hicks, 41, of Elm City, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly on July 22, 2026. She was born on December 17, 1984, in Wilson, North Carolina, to the late William "Billy" Hicks and Bonnie Pearson. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, whose love of nature and adventure she proudly carried throughout her life.

Stephanie leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, William Jaylen Barnes, and daughter, Sophia Lyana Williams; her devoted companion, Napoleon "Pole" Jordan; her loving mother, Bonnie Pearson; her sister, Candice Hicks; her brother, Matthew Pearson (Ashton); two cherished nieces, Teagan (Howard) and Delylah; three nephews, T.J., Holden, and Dakota; her chosen family, Momma Lisa (Papa) and Shannah; her stepsons, Little Nate and Nikko; two grandchildren; and her faithful canine companions, Layla and Phoebe. She also leaves behind a host of extended family members and dear friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with her.

Stephanie had an adventurous spirit and a deep appreciation for the beauty of God's creation. Her love for the Appalachian Mountains inspired a passion for traveling, camping, and embracing the outdoors. Like her father, she had an unwavering love for coffee—especially when enjoyed beside a campfire beneath the open sky.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures. Whether tending to her beloved garden, making sure every strand of hair was perfectly in place with her trusted comb and hairspray, or spending meaningful moments with those she loved, Stephanie lived each day with enthusiasm and authenticity. She treasured family gatherings, spontaneous sunrise trips to the mountains, peaceful walks around Lake Wilson, and the laughter that filled the room during holiday traditions like the annual Saran Wrap ball game.

Stephanie's free spirit, generous heart, and vibrant personality left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. While her passing leaves an immeasurable void, her love, laughter, and adventurous soul will continue to live on in the hearts of those she loved. As we remember her, may we look toward the heavens, find the brightest star in the night sky, and celebrate the countless beautiful memories she gifted to us all.
